Kesken kesää syksyn valju valta;
hohkaa kylmän henki kaikkialta,

hallatuulen hammas luihin puree,
metsä, järvi murheellisna suree,

saaret seisoo liikkumattomassa
ikävässä ikiharmajassa,

puhuu kuolemaa jo puiden tohu,
uhkaa kadotusta korven kohu

Viiltää veno läpi luonnon karun;
vana kertoo orvon onnentarun,

joka tuskin päästen päivänkukkaan
kuihtui kylmyyteen ja joutui hukkaan,

Mut ei sentään elämästä laannut,
vaikk’on vuosia jo maassa maannut,

kulkee kummitellen ihmismaita,
muistaa aikojansa autuaita

A Cold Evening:

The cold reign of autumn in the middle of the summer
The spirit of the cold glows everywhere

The tooth of the frost-wind bites your bones,
The forest and the lake mourn in sorrow

The islands stand still
in the unmoving, miserable ever-grey

The sounds of the trees speak of death
The stir of the forest warns about perdition

A boat cuts through the bleak landscape;
The trail tells a story of an orphaned happiness,

that barely having bloomed,
succumbed to cold and went to waste

But it didn't cease from living
despite having lain on the ground for years

It haunts the lands of men
Reminiscing happier times
